Early Life and Relocation
Kieran Kichuk was born on November 19, 1995, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. However, he did not spend his early years there, as his family relocated to San Diego, California, when he was still an infant. The Kieran Kichuk family lived in California for five years before moving back to Canada, eventually settling in Markham, Ontario.
Athletic Upbringing and Passion for Running
Sports played a significant role in Kieran’s childhood, largely due to the influence of his father, a former national-level track athlete and NCAA Division 1 runner. His father’s dedication to physical activity shaped the family’s lifestyle, making daily running a regular practice.
Despite not being pressured into competitive sports, all four Kichuk siblings participated in athletics. Kieran, in particular, developed a passion for running, competing in track and field events, with a focus on the 1500 meters and cross-country. His dedication led him to perform at both regional and provincial levels.
Transition to Martial Arts
In 2009, inspired by the success of George St-Pierre in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), 13-year-old Kieran decided to explore martial arts. He initially trained in both Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, after six months, he chose to focus solely on grappling, eventually stepping away from high school track to join the wrestling team. His commitment paid off, as he went on to compete at the Provincial level in wrestling.
Jiu-Jitsu Journey and Black Belt Promotion
Kieran’s introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began under the guidance of black belt instructor Steve Lin, who played a crucial role in his progression from white to brown belt. In 2010, Lin’s gym became affiliated with Team Lloyd Irvin, which provided Kieran with opportunities to train with Lloyd Irvin’s renowned competition squad, “Medal Chasers.”
By late 2017, Kieran started training under Fernando Zulick, also known as Gringo. Under Zulick’s mentorship, Kieran continued to refine his skills, ultimately earning his black belt on December 20, 2020.
